London Kitchen Extension: Modern Design in a 1930s Home

28 January 2026 — 2 mins read time

We take a closer look at a modern kitchen extension in a 1930s mock-Tudor home in Harringay, London. Maple plywood and Fenix Rosso Jaipur fronts, concrete-look quartz, and white IKEA Veddinge wall units make it both functional and striking.

Can you tell us a bit about your home?

'It’s a 1930s house, mock-tudor style in a conservation area so anything visible from the front can’t be altered visibly. We renovated it in the past year with a ground floor rear extension with triple pitched roofs in the open plan area where the kitchen resides - giving generous volume to the area.'

What was the kitchen like before you renovated it?

'It used to be a long shaker-style galley kitchen in a side extension separated from the living areas of the house. The renovation allowed for an open plan area connecting the kitchen with the new living areas via a large kitchen island.'

What were your main goals for the renovation?

'Functional in layout and choice of appliances, ample storage, connection to living areas both in use and in material, visual statement.'

If budget was a concern, what were you prepared to spend on or save on?

'Save on appliance branding, spend on function & design.'

How would you describe the look and feel you wanted to achieve?

'Modern/contemporary: concrete, maple wood, burgundy, white. Red zinc cladding influenced our choice of maple for a warmer wood, and burgundy for the statement island. The polished concrete floor influenced our choice of concrete-look quartz worktop and splashback.'

Were there any standout design features you wanted to include?

'Maple door front wall – with customised appliance garages in the corner. A Fenix Rosso Jaipur statement island - with waterfall sides.'

How did you find working with Plykea?

'Plykea (Laura) was thorough & detailed, and provided solutions to design issues/questions throughout the process. Supply of the door fronts was smooth.'

What advice would you give to someone planning a kitchen renovation?

'Get fully involved in the detail - don’t assume your architect & contractors know everything. Plan far ahead in advance. Choose as much of the detail as early as possible so that you have a base to be able to subsequently tweak better.'
