Compare Formica and Fenix-faced birch plywood. Discover durability, finish, cost, sustainability, and which is best for your Plykea kitchen.

Quick Guide to Plykea Laminates

Both materials are laminate surfaces bonded to a birch plywood core, combining a durable colored surface with a stable structural substrate.

  • Formica Matte58 is a high pressure laminate (or HPL) which is a proven, hard-wearing and cost-effective option, with excellent heat and chemical resistance and the widest range of colors.

  • Fenix-faced plywood is beautifully ultra-matte, anti-fingerprint, and repairable at a micro-scratch level, making it a premium finish for contemporary interiors. Its anti-fingerprint quality makes it an ideal choice for darker colors.

The best choice depends on your priorities:

  • Value, color choice and durability → Formica Matte58

  • Luxury look, tactile performance and sustainability → Fenix NTM

What Are Laminate-Faced Birch Plywood Panels?

  • Formica is a traditional high-pressure laminate (HPL) made by compressing resin-impregnated paper under heat and pressure. Fenix is also a layered laminate, but its surface is engineered using advanced nanostructure technology.

  • Laminate-faced plywood panels are made by bonding the colored laminate sheet onto an engineered FSC-certified birch plywood core.

  • Plykea cabinet fronts and cover panels are laminated on both sides for strength and durability. As standard, the underside of countertop sheets has a matte white laminate balance sheet. Double-sided laminate countertops are also available on request — just ask!

  • The birch plywood edges of each item are hand-finished in our San Francisco workshop and treated with premium hard wax oil.

  • The laminate layer provides color, texture and surface durability, while the birch plywood contributes structural strength and stability.

What is Formica Faced Birch Plywood?

  • Formica Matte58 is the original high-pressure laminate. It is robust and an ideal choice for high-traffic kitchens and utility spaces.

  • Stain resistance: While spills should be wiped up promptly, the material meets EN 438-2:2005, a test that checks resistance to over 40 everyday substances. Tested substances include tea, coffee, milk, citric acid, acetone, alcohol, fruit juices, detergents, and coloring agents.

  • Formica requires minimal maintenance and maintains color over time. Easy to clean – no need for specialist products; most stains wipe away with mild soap and water.

  • The surface has a low light reflection matte satin finish with a lightly textured feel.

  • Formica is available in a very wide range of colors and patterns. Over 80 color options in the solid colors alone! Color samples of the Matte58 finish can be obtained directly from the Formica website.

  • If you're considering a dark color, always order samples and stress test them for fingerprints. The high pigment in very dark Formica colors can also be susceptible to micro scratches. If the samples are not looking their best after being handled then Fenix is likely to be a better option for you.

What is Fenix Faced Birch Plywood?

  • Fenix NTM is a premium material with an ultra-matte, anti-reflective surface.

  • The material utilises innovative nanotechnology. Its multilayer nanostructure construction gives it unique and highly specialised characteristics. The surface is anti-fingerprint, smooth and soft to the touch.

  • Superficial micro-scratches can heal with the application of heat.

  • Fenix is highly durable, water-resistant, and easy to clean. Use a magic sponge, or a damp cloth, with hot water and mild detergents. Abrasive cleaners and bleach should be avoided as they can degrade the nano surface.

  • Fenix is available as standard Fenix NTM and Fenix NTM Bloom. Both are carbon neutral and low in VOC emissions. In addition, 100% of the electrical energy used in production comes from renewable resources. 18% of this from solar panels installed on the roof of its Arpa production site.

  • Fenix NTM Bloom goes one step further in sustainability and features Bloom technology which has been developed to include 50% lignin resin. Lignin is a natural polymer found in timber and a waste product from the paper industry. Like Arpa Bloom, this technology reduces CO2 in manufacturing by up to 26%.

  • Fenix colors are timeless and curated for a luxury aesthetic. Samples can be obtained directly from the Fenix website.

The following Fenix Bloom colors are not readily available in the US and are special-order items. They have a 16-week lead time and are shipped from Italy with a high minimum order quantity. The affected colors are:
